Early Years Foundation Stage projects

At Foundation Stage we offer three types of projects.

1. First Steps - Adventures in Music

6-week “First Steps” projects focusing on joyful music making whilst exploring core musical concepts with both FS1 and FS2

2. Teach Together: Adventures in Music / Step into Music

New for 2025 to 2026: an 11-week Teach Together option for FS1/2 that supports EY practitioners to develop their own skills in leading music making in their settings alongside delivering the Adventures in Music / Step into Music projects

3. Music Makers

11-week “Music Makers” projects for FS2 take a progressive approach to exploring concepts such as steady beat and pitch across one, two or three terms. Those attending will develop listening and social skills, get the whole body moving, and support wellbeing for every child.

Foundation Stage 1 (Pre School)

First Steps: Adventures in Music

Teach Together: Adventures in Music / Step into Music

Overview

  • a specialist-led programme that builds staff confidence through modelling, mentoring and reflection

  • includes a 20 minute adult-led music session per week, plus child-led exploration and coaching for a nominated EY practitioner

Instruments

  • voice, plus optional handheld percussion

  • 11 x 1-hour sessions

    • 45 minutes delivery

    • 15 minutes setup

  • option to split sessions

Project structure

  • week 1: joint reflection and planning

  • weeks 2 to 10: class teaching

  • week 11: demonstration lesson or standard session

Foundation Stage 2 (Reception)

Music Makers

Overview

Duration

  • 1, 2 or 3 x 11-week terms (terms must be taken in order)

Summary

  • Music Makers gets children moving, supports wellbeing, and sparks a love of making music together

  • singing games and traditional rhymes taught through the Kodály approach

  • builds core musicianship skills: steady beat, pitch, listening, confidence, turn-taking and whole-body engagement

Term themes

  • term 1 – all about beat: singing voice, steady beat, pitch (high/low)

  • term 2 – elements of music: tempo, dynamics, percussion unit

  • term 3 – music makers: beat, pitch (high/low/middle), solo/group singing

Instruments

  • voice (plus classroom percussion in term 2)

  • 11 x 1-hour sessions per term

    • 45 minutes delivery

    • 15 minutes setup

  • option to split into two 25-minute sessions

  • week 1: “Head Start” observation visit

  • weeks 2 to 10: class sessions
