Band in a Van has returned for Phase 2, bringing an exciting and inclusive music project to schools across Central Bedfordshire. Building on the success of the first phase earlier this year, the programme focuses on accessibility, creativity and meaningful progression for every young person involved.
This eight‑week project is delivered by Inspiring Music in partnership with the council’s Hearing Impaired and Visual Impaired Services, working with pupils at Weatherfield Academy, The Chiltern School, Ivel Valley School and Parkfields Middle School. Weekly sessions are taking place throughout the summer term, supporting 65 young people with a wide range of needs, including SEND, SEMH, visual impairments, Deaf learners and profound and multiple learning difficulties.
At the heart of Band in a Van is the joy of making music together. Pupils are learning to play the pBuzz, alongside a range of accessible instruments such as Boomwhackers, Soundbops and percussion, ensuring everyone can actively take part. Sessions are carefully designed so that each young person can engage, progress and express themselves in ways that are meaningful to them.
The project is delivered in collaboration with The Alina Orchestra, whose Band in a Van musicians bring each session to life through energetic live performances. Performing as a brass quintet with drum kit, the musicians inspire participation, model musical skills and create an exciting, authentic experience for pupils.
Music Facilitator Rachel Edmonds leads the learning across the project, working closely with the musicians to shape sessions that are adaptive, inclusive and celebratory of every contribution. The programme has also been shaped with expert guidance from The Amber Trust and AudioVisability, ensuring best‑practice support for children who are Deaf or have visual impairments.
Band in a Van Phase 2 is about more than learning an instrument — it’s about confidence, connection and finding joy through music. As one young participant proudly said after playing along for the first time:
“That’s how we make music baby!”
Inspiring Music looks forward to seeing how the young people grow in confidence, skills and musical identity as the project continues.
